Less than a minute to know that this will be great. I have no idea how they did it, really. I mean it was just a set of wide shots with a guy humming over them, literally nothing else there, and yet on roughly 50 seconds mark I was thinking: "Damn, this will be another anime in my list this season". Not literal season, since all episodes are out already, so I will probably finish it before season ends, but still.
The best explanation I can think of is that everything that I saw and heard had "intentionality". They were not just following the flow wherever it takes them, but rather thought-out the whole story first, and then started creating things around the "core" of it. I was seeing this during the whole episode, too: everything had its place, everything was where it was supposed to be, and there was meaning behind it. The panning of the shots, the lighting, the dialogues, the colors, the voice tones, all transitions... All of it made my brain giggle like a little girl who got confessed for the first time (no idea if they giggle in such circumstances, though).
The build-up of things to come was amazing, and I really hope they can keep it up through the whole series, and just with the quality of animation, art and sound, but with the story as well. There will definitely be some weird and crazy stuff happening, and it can be quite easy to ruin it by going overboard too quickly.
