It's ok for something running in the background. Other than that it may be disappointing for quite a few people. I would not call it a thriller, although it does have some nice suspenseful moments, especially in the first episode. It probably should have leaned on more on the concept of "madness" in its title and make the characters doubt stuff more.
It is also not that strong as a political statement. The take on the problem of racism here is interesting, and there are moments where racism does go both ways (as it happens in real life), but the way they concluded this narrative was quite weak. Not to spoil things, but the motivation for the "actual culprit" felt too random. It may be somewhat realistic, I guess, but considering what was happening the story before that it felt flat in my eyes.
I also think they wasted opportunity with exploring community aspect. There are a few moments, where community is shown as important, but they are mostly fillers, because the focus is on the main character. Which is fine in general, since the story is about his problem, but he felt very isolated from people even during his downtimes, and was not getting that much support, aside from few specific people.
Why I think they wasted the opportunity? Because there was no one really helping develop the character. He is shown as flawed person, which is good, but at points in the story he suddenly changes with little to no stimuli from the outside. I am comparing him to recent Cross series, where Cross was changing by his interactions with other people changing his perception on things. I did not notice that with Muncie.
But again, if you just want something playing in the background - it probably will be able to keep you entertained enough. Just do not expect to change you world or something.
