Born in the Sharlayan colony in the Dravanian Hinterlands, Merande inherited her keen sense of curiosity and her hunger from knowledge from her mother, who worked in the Great Gubal Library. When the colony’s evacuation was ordered, Merande found herself unhappy with the idea of fleeing to a homeland she’d never known, and opted to make herself scarce until the evacuation was complete and she’d been left behind. Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest decision, but she does not regret her choice; remaining behind has given her many opportunities to expand her knowledge and aid others.

While she has a particular interest in aether, a wide variety of subjects have captured her attention over the years; most of her income comes from her work as a scribe and calligrapher, with a less steady flow from her hobby of chocobo breeding, an extension of her study into heritable traits. She also has a fondness for romance and adventure novels.
