Growing up in the lower ward of Limsa Lominsa, Roulin spent his childhood trafficking black market goods for local pirates and rogues. One day, while stealing an exceptionally beautiful sword from a visiting dignitary from Ul'dah, Roulin was caught by the sword's owner. Convinced that he would spend the rest of his life in a Lominsan prison, Roulin was surprised when the man offered the sword to him. The only thing that the old man asked for was that Roulin go to Ul'dah and train at the Gladiator Guild. Roulin promised to do exactly that.

In Ul'dah, Roulin trained and became one of the top students in the Gladiator Guild, eventually earning his way into the Paladin Order. Let us not forget the small deed of freeing Eorzea from the Garlean Empire and the beastmen's fallen Gods. Life was good for our petty thief from Limsa Lominsa.

Sadly, Roulin's happiness came to an end when he was betrayed by his allies in the Crystal Brave and Ul'dah syndicate. Roulin lost his allies, friends, and hope.

Ending up in the isolated north, Roulin entered Ishgard as a refugee. Losing all hope in the light, Roulin cast down his Paladin garb and weapon, turning back to his life as a pauper, that is, until he met Fray.

Fray taught Roulin to harness his anger and use it to bring justice to the likes of those who would harm the innocent. As Roulin fell further and further into darkness, he became more violent, disturbing even his closest remaining allies. This dark time in Roulin's life came to a head in Whitebrim, where Roulin encountered the true Fray... is own inner darkness. After a turbulent fight, Roulin stood victorious over his own darkness. His heart and mind cleared of the sins of his past, Roulin continued on in his quest to bring justice to those who have shattered his happiness.
