When Yerentai was young, he was part of a very small travelling clan (Angura) of few that took risks for adventures. While he was actually born in Eorzea, there was a period of time where the clan returned to the Azim Steppe. Such a trip wasn't without risks, and their journey back to Eorzea was not met with welcome weathers.
When he was found washed up on the shores of La Noscea, he couldn't quite remember how he got there. He remembered his name, but those he described as his family were never found.
He could not answer where he was from. He did understand, however, that he was not a native Eorzean.
Yerentai was as versatile as a child could be. From Limsa, he soon met an elderly merchant family who travelled and took him in. Often at the major cities, he liked to dabble in different trades. By the time he was a young adult, he had a good variety of skills. Adept enough with weapon and craft that the merchant family appreciated it, and granted him resources and connections when they retired.
So he took to adventuring like it was his natural calling.
Throughout adventuring, he seems very calm and keeps to himself. But a little bit of warming up and he will reveal how he can be passionate about what he likes. In Ul'Dah, he met the Lalafell Yayaya Yaya, and they connected through their merchantile whims.
Soon, he wanted to see for himself what Doma and the Azim Steppe was like. It held enough of a special place in his youth that he slowly regained hazy memories of traveling with the family he had lost.
Eorzeans never seem to pronounce his name properly. He accepts that in familiarity, it's easier to tell an Eorzean friend to call him "Yeri" instead of trying to explain how "Ye-RenTai" is pronounced. Besides, at this point? He can hardly remember how to speak any of the Doman languages.
