Nergui's name, meaning 'nameless' in the Xaela language, was given to him by a Qestir mystic who foretold of his importance as a great hero in the future and warned of his gift (Hydaelyn's blessing.) The name is given to children of any gender in order to trick evil spirits into believing that the child is unimportant, therefore keeping it safe from harm.
His parents both died while he was very young, and he was therefore raised by his aunt and grandmother with his cousin. He was a someone rebellious, curious child who often made friends with children from other tribes and had a knack for getting into danger and coming out safely. Around the age of 22, he decided to leave the Steppe to learn of other cultures and seek adventure. His family was not surprised by the decision and never fully expected him to stay, as the mystic has prophesied.
He was about 25, living in Kugane when Dalamud fell, and was drawn to Eorzea as word of their need of adventurers and workers to help in the aftermath had reached the East. Although he was already somewhat skilled in Xaela magecraft, he enrolled with the Thaumaturge's guild in Ul'dah, drawn in by their exciting promise of great power and harnessing the destructive and awesome forces of nature like raging fires and thunderstorms which he both feared and admired as a child, and soon became a talented Black Mage though he now specializes in a few other trades as well. Soon after, he met the Scions, who were keen to his gifts, and his fate as a great hero began to unfold. He does not like fame, however, and does his best to hide his identity as the Warrior of Light and Eikon Slayer of legend.
He enjoys fashion, nature, music, and other artistic activities, but like many Xaela he can't stay away from an exciting battle or hunt. Although mostly a quiet loner, he cares about his friends and the wellbeing of others in general and tries to hide his true feelings to look strong. Nergui does not follow strict ideas about relationships, but he loves and admires Estinien very much (though he struggles to eloquently express it.)
After a spell of depression following Endwalker, he nearly left the Scions but has rejoined as well as rekindled his love of treasure hunting. He can often be found spreading the wealth and assisting new adventurers.
