Mal was becoming bored with his duties as guardian to the seventh gate of Hades. His real interests lay in deal making with ‘top-siders’. He gets the idea in his head to step away from his duties and join the above folk. Everything was going real good until he just had to save a little Miqo'te girl from being hit by a chocobo carriage, and she just ‘had’ to find his broach that could mitigate his powers. So now he’s bound to this tiny child as her guardian and protector. Though if Mal was honest with himself, he’d tell you that after doing this for some time. It’s not so bad.
