Nosferatu (2024)

Reminded me of 2022's "The Batman". The way the shadows (and lighting) were used to obscure things, the relatively high amount of "dirty" frames. The purpose was obviously different, of course. "The Batman" was shot that way to make it feel more "real", while Nosferatu was meant to be more "mysterious".

While I can't say it succeeded at that, it definitely was able to create a peculiar atmosphere. Besides the shadows-play the transitions between dream sequences and reality were very nicely blending the two. In fact, it's difficult to say if any of those "dreams" even were "dreams", and to me this means that the goal was achieved.

I think my main issue with the movie is that characters were kind of underdeveloped, and lore - even more so. I expect it's not the fault of Stoker's book, since it clearly inspired a lot of later stories (although I have not read it, so maybe the book is same). I especially lacked explanation of what was so special about Ellen, and her earlier connection to Orlok was also very obscure. That works for the general atmosphere, but it did take a bit from my overall satisfaction.
