My understanding was that this is not a sequel to previous anime in the franchise, but something standalone. I was wrong. I did not understand much of what was going on with all this myriad of characters, besides the fact that this is a gacha-anime, possibly oriented towards girls. I guess you do need to know what happened in previous shows.
Also, what's with this guy's design? The one who wears what looks like a school uniform from modern age, and a cloak, hood of which is always a little bit to the side? He sticks out like a sore thumb, and I am not sure if I would call his design "cool".
