Another Tim Burton's "classic", that I've watched recently. I am really starting to see that opinion about him being overhyped may, indeed, have some ground.
Don't get me wrong, this is not necessarily a bad movie. It certainly has amazing character design, overall art style and its... Let's call it "action" is overall well staged. But I think that's all there is to the movie, really. Meaning, that the story being told is kind of shallow. It is well structured, yes, but when you think really hard about it, it is somewhat nonsense. In a way it kind of plays into the art style, of course, but I simply do not believe the "love theme" here.
I think there are 3 "loves" here: Emily and her killer, Emily and Victor, Victoria and Victor. None of them showed any signs of real love. Relationship between Emily and her killer is not really shown even. Emily's affection towards Victor is out of loneliness, Victor's affection towards Emily is out of pure defeatism. Victoria's and Victor's affections towards each other is more like "I'm rolling with the punches, but the guy/gal seems quite intriguing, so why not?". Personally, I can't feel for any of them here.
Nevertheless, this is a fun watch. It probably could have been better, if it was extra 30 minutes longer and explored the pseudo-love, but, it is what it is.
