Started quite good, but turned into a mess around mid-way. While the premise was kind of "magical" it felt somewhat grounded, if not realistic. Powers were not everything, and generally had some limitations, which made most of the fights relatively smart. It was interesting how Kaname was adapting to things and growing as a person, as a leader. Yes, his leadership sometimes felt more like "power of friendship", but it also kind of made sense for the character.

But then there was a certain event, which I will try not to spoil. The purpose of it, in essence, was to expand the universe of the story and scale it up. It made sense, as well, I had no problems with that. Problem is that after that it started turning into a mess of a narrative. No, not because of the Greed (you'll know if you read far enough): their concept also made total sense by the end of the manga, even though in last 2 chapters it was also mostly irrelevant.

While scaling the story up, the author slowly started forgetting about powers' limitations. In some cases there was explanation like "training", which is fine, though. But lack of these limitations and certain explanations to the lore kind of reduced the stakes. Not to say that it was completely bad, no, some plot twists still fit the narrative well, even though they were somewhat predictable, it's just things did not feel as intense. It was no longer "survival by the skin of the teeth", but more like "we will survive, because we have friendship and Kaname".

Kaname becoming the center of power, actually, annoyed me the most. Yeah, I get it, he is the protagonist, he is supposed to be important. But again, he started as a very grounded character, flawed character even. He was aware of his flaws and weaknesses and tried to work around them in smart ways. At some point smart ways started turning into "because it's Kaname and he planned something, that we now see unfolding".

Perhaps the conclusion was just rushed? A couple of chapters had art that was incomplete. Or maybe it was just poor translation? My point is, that I liked first half or maybe even 2 thirds of the story way more than the last part. Still, it's not the worst, obviously, since otherwise I would have dropped it instead of reading till the end.
