This definitely had nostalgia glasses effect.
While watching Frozen Empire I was reminded, that there was a TV show, in Ghostbusters universe, that I enjoyed as a kid. Since it was, technically, a sequel to "The Real Ghostbusters", I tried "Real" ones first, but could not watch it for more than 5 minutes, since it felt too dated for me, and watching something like 160 episodes would have been a chore. So I skipped to "Extreme" ones. It's better, but not as good, as I remember it.
It is definitely darker. I remember that the show felt "creepy" to me at times, and based on the first 2 episodes I rewatched - it does make sense. The general atmosphere, the lighting, the colors, the pacing (at times)... They all seem to work on a feeling, that there is something "sinister" going on. In fact, I'd say it is close to (some) elements of the original duology, although not exactly the same. Which is still good.
What's not good are the dialogues, that just ruin it for me. Or maybe not just the dialogues but the "humor". It feels out of place most of the time. One could argue, that some people joke when they are under stress, and that's a valid point, but not when at least 3 characters seem to be like that. They are not going full-on Spider-Manin terms of quantity, but they are not even trying to reach the same quality. I mean, Peter's jokes were witty, smart, fast, descriptive, and matched the situation perfectly, making it believable, that these are from stress, that they are a coping mechanism.
In this show it's not the case. Most of the jokes felt flat and forced. There were also some minor non-verbal scenes that were meant to be funny. Considering that the overall atmosphere is supposed to be "spooky" they ended up breaking the immersion for me, so I dropped it after all. I would not mind them having a reboot for the show, especially, since it was inclusive before the wokeness and in a way, that did not feel forced. Dial back the humor, choose aesthetics close to The New Mutants or something similar, polish the dialogs and story - and you're golden. Probably. You would need to be careful with Kylie, especially if it will be live-action, because fanboys would not forgive ruining probably 2nd best goth girl after Raven from (Teen) Titans.
