Too bad the show got cancelled. And because of legal rights issues between Sony and Marvel, too, and not something, so because of greed, technically. I really enjoyed the 26 episodes we got. It's definitely better than Unlimited was, and in some way better than 1990s show, too. I think my main complaint would be that Peter is almost a playboy here, which does not really match the character that much, but on the other hand, he is a teenager, and conflicting emotions were depicted quite good.
Especially the anger part. 1990s show also had anger moments here and there, but they felt flat most of the time, forced and unnatural, even though justified (at least outside of symbiote). In Spectacular there was actual thought behind them, logic, builtd-up towards them. Green Goblin saga was also intriguing, till the very end.
And we also got Gwen, who is just such an adorable geek. It felt so wrong, that in 1990s show Peter did not even know Gwen (which was clearly shown in season 5, when she had a cameo), even though she had so much impact on comics' version. I also liked, that MJ was not just into Peter for Peter, as it was the case in 1990s.
As far as I remember from comics, Peter being Spider-Man was a huge part of made MJ love him, which was lost in 1990s, but in Spectacular it's more fleshed out, considering how distant to him she was in some instances, and that she intended to be just friends. Heck, they even got Flash Thompson right.
Really sad, they did not get to finish 65 episodes as planned. Such a loss.
